In the topic, Dukie alludes to the possibility of a "dead rail" in the Continental Cup, as well as the Winter GP. This has led me to thinking: how many of you out there invoke riding on the rail into your riding strategy. I thought the axiom here was to always attempt to claim the rail, as it would seem most beneficial to realizing the shortest ride, and therefore, preservation of the energy bar. How many of you also seek to claim the rail out of the gate, and is it possibly bad strategy? Also, how often would you recommend whipping the horse after it achieves the "turbo spurt" coming down the homestretch?

I try for the rail in some specific situations. I try to keep frontrunners there since they seem to lack stamina. I try to use the rail if the race is beyond my horse's listed distance to "shorten the race" for them. I also try to gain some ground on the turns if I'm lagging behind. Otherwise, it's race by race.

I only ride the rail if I'm in a breakaway pack. If you look closely at the turf you can see a sorta groove about an inch (real not game distance) from the rail in the turf. I like to ride right there.
Too much of a chance to be blocked if your on the rail. I personally have won countless races pinning the Fav. behind a rail hugging rabbit when the rabbit fades. Its so cool to see a 'rival' finish 10th because I boxed him in...

Well, usually i run the rail every race i could get there, and if i can't get to the rail, i try to get as close to the rail as i could. The only time i won't run on the rail is in the Continental Cup or Winter GP, where i run in the two hole

I have found the rail to be a huge advantage in most races, but especially in dirt races. When you enter the "whip zone" as I call it (3 furlongs to go) in a dirt race, usually you are on a significant curve. I find that I win tons of races that I otherwise wouldn't have just by being clear on the rail and I start whipping at 2.9 or 3.0 to go. I try to set up a clear rail from the get go. Either by pushing the horse in front of me so it moves right or I get ahead of it and then slow down. The rail is really dead in the continental cup and winter gp. I have noticed that all races run at those two tracks on the turf are rail-dead. The inside at these tracks seems to have a dirty brown tint to it. I usually have success about 7 horses wide.
