I've had some discussions with Tim and Padraig and there is agreement on the key points.
First, in case you haven't seen anything about this before, the Loveday Cup will be our equivalent of the Ryder Cup ie a teams based event. The races will be run in Week 18.
The key principles are:
- two teams - Europe and the Rest
- one horse per trainer per race
- trainers will nominate horses for the races in TOM
- the captains will each then select the team's horses for the races
- while most of the races will be open, there will also be some restricted races
- all races at one venue on good ground
- six horses per team per race
- points for the 5 horses - 10, 6, 3, 2, 1
- no stakes money or points for the various champs (it's about the glory and bragging rights)
- entries would need to close at the end of week 16 to allow time for the captains to select the horses - this means that the restricted criteria would apply at the time the entries close
The following race categories are proposed:
- 3yo+ (10 races) 5,6,7,8,10,12,14,16,18,20 furlongs for all
- 3yo ony (4 races) 8 and 12 furlongs for both male and female
- 2yo (3 races) 5,7,9 furlongs for all
- 3yo+ (4 races) 6,9,12,15 furlongs RESTRICTED
I had originally considered a more compressed programme but the captains are keen for a real battle.
Let us know if you have any comments.
