A warning that I am in the process of modifying TOM to handle multiple leagues including - potentially - the Greyhound Pro League.

The logon process and menus on the TOM Main menu have already been updated and you shouldn't notice any changes although I've changed some of the wording.

However, given that this is a major change, there is always the potential for something to go wrong and experience tells that if something CAN go wrong, it WILL go wrong ... at least some times.

Don't worry, my enthusiasm for change is coming to a rapid end.

NOTE - the Switch Games link won't have any impact apart from a very small number of testers ... just 2 at this stage! If you were involved in multiple leagues (SOPL, US SOPL, GPL) this function would allow you to switch to a different game.

Just to add to this post, I'm working with Jim to integrate the GPL with TOM.

At present, I've added upgraded the logon process to handle multiple leagues and have also finished the upload process ie adding dogs to TOM. I still need to upgrade the edit details page so you can change the dog details eg sex, pref distance etc. This won't take long.

The upload process was the last major functionality added to the original TOM and this is the heart of automating the management of the GPL so it's good progress.

The next key function will be managing races and race entries.

The final part of the puzzle will be generating a text extract from the GM CK which will handle the processing of race results.

Go back to the main menu and you will notice the Download races. The races will be uploaded to TOM and you will be able to access them through TOM for viewing in your Race Builder. So that is what has been done so far. Not bad for one day, eh?! Dave is just doing a fantastic job for us! No more screen captures of race cards formcards and kennels rosters!!! Dog and Trainers stats automatically updated for us! You will be able to nominate your dogs for races directly into TOM instead of putting them on Excel spreadsheets and emailing them to me! With so much labor removed, we will be able to host more races much easier!

Its different all the SOPL members have to register on TOM their name and new passwords. At this moment I am the only one registered for TOM until Dave finishes building it. Then he will announce the beta test in which all GPL members will be able to register, log on and test out. JimCougar

There is a challenge ahead of Dave and I though and that is how to set up the races and the season race schedule in TOM. I think the simplest way to do it in GPL 2 is to do what we just begun to do in the GPL 1 and that is have just a certain number of distances contested each week. These are the thoughts I had, that I communicated to Dave on this area;

WHAT THE GRADER DOES NOT DO AT THIS TIME IS TO SORT THE DOGS INTO RACES EACH WEEK. SO IS THERE IS A WAY YOU CAN BUILD THE GPL SIDE OF TOM SO THAT IT CAN ACCOMMODATE BOTH? WELL ACTUALLY WHAT I MEAN IS THAT....HMM... THIS COULD BE A PICKLE. IT IS TOUGH TO DECIDE THE RACES BEFOREHAND BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY VARIABLES AT TO WHAT COULD MAKE UP A RACE... THE GRADES, SEX, AGE AND DISTANCE. THE BIGGEST MONKEY WRENCH IN THE WHOLE THING IS THAT ONLY 6 DOGS CAN BE IN ANY RACE.

OH! WHAT ABOUT THIS?! THERE ARE 14 GPL OFFICIAL DISTANCES (The game itself has more distances that are contested). MAYBE IT SHOULD BE NARROWED DOWN TO JUST 7 DISTANCES CONTESTED EACH WEEK.

LETS SAY THAT WEEK 5 THE RACE TRACK IS MELBOURNE AND THE DISTANCES TO BE CONTESTED WILL BE 275M, 375M Hurdles, 450M, 525M Hurdles, 625M, 650M, 750M & 875M. THEN LETS SAY THAT WE HAVE 5 RACES SET UP FOR EACH DISTANCE. THAT WOULD BE A TOTAL OF 36 RACES. AND TIMES 6 TRAP OPENINGS PER RACE THAT WOULD BE A TOTAL OF 210 DOGS HAVING A CHANCE TO COMPETE THAT WEEK.

IF THERE WERE ONLY 15 PLAYERS THAT WOULD MEAN THEY WOULD HAVE 14 DOGS COMPETING THAT WEEK. WITH 20 PLAYERS = 10 DOGS, 25 PLAYERS = 8 DOGS, 30 PLAYERS = 7 DOGS. HOW MANY HORSES ON AN AVERAGE DO SOPL TRAINERS SUBMIT TO RACES EACH WEEK? MANY MORE THAN THIS, RIGHT? EITHER WAY HAVING A 45 DOG KENNEL SEEMS A BIT POINTLESS. MAYBE IT SHOULD BE NARROWED DOWN TO MAYBE 30 DOGS INSTEAD.

SO THE PLAYERS COULD SUBMIT THEIR DOGS TO THE 6 TRAPS PER RACE UNTIL ALL 5 RACES PER DISTANCE ARE FILLED. IF THERE ARE 30 PLAYERS AND THERE ARE 30 OPEN TRAPS PER DISTANCE THEN THE LIMIT SHOULD BE 1 DOG ENTERED PER DISTANCE.

I JUST THOUGHT OF SOMETHING ELSE. SAY THE 525M Hurdles' 5 RACES HAS NOT FILLED UP. COULD THERE BE IN THE FINAL 24 HOURS BEFORE THE ENTRY DEADLINE, A FREE-FOR-ALL? WHAT I MEAN IS IF 10 TRAPS ARE STILL OPEN ON THE 525M Hurdles races 24 HOURS BEFORE DEADLINE, MAYBE ALL TRAINERS WOULD BE FREE TO ENTER ONE MORE DOG AT THAT DISTANCE UNTIL ALL THE TRAPS WERE FILLED.

ANOTHER THOUGHT IS THAT THE RACE SCHEDULER ON THOSE 525M DISTANCE RACES COULD HAVE ONE RACE BE ONLY FOR 1 YOs, ANOTHER ONE FOR GRADE 8's, ANOTHER AS A HANDICAP, ANOTHER AS A TRIAL AND ANOTHER AS A GRADE 5, ETC.

SOME WEEKS IT WOULD BE FEATURE RACES ONLY. THAT GETS TRICKY BECAUSE EACH DISTANCE WOULD HAVE HEATS, THEN SEMI-FINALS AND THEN THE FINAL. IN THE REAL WORLD, HEATS ARE CONTESTED ONE WEEK, SEMI-FINALS ANOTHER WEEK AND THE FINALS ARE ON THE WEEK AFTER THAT. I WOULD RATHER HAVE WHAT WE DID IN THE GPL SEASON 1 AND THAT IS TO HAVE HEATS AND SEMI-FINALS ONE WEEK AND THE FINAL ON THE FOLLOWING WEEK. ANY WEEK WHERE THERE WERE FEATURE FINALS, THE NUMBER OF RACES FOR THE NON-FEATURE CONTESTS WOULD HAVE TO BE ADJUSTED SO THAT THERE WERE NO MORE THAN 35 RACES CONTESTED FOR THAT ENTIRE WEEK. DOES THAT MAKE SENSE?

THERE COULD BE AS MANY AS 36 DOGS CONTESTED FOR ONE FEATURE RACE. THAT WOULD BE 6 HEAT RACES, WITH THE TOP 3 FINISHERS QUALIFYING FOR THE SEMI-FINALS. THERE WOULD THEN BE 3 SEMI-FINAL RACES WITH THE TOP 2 QUALIFYING FOR THE FINAL IN THE FOLLOWING WEEK. AS YOU CAN SEE JUST 1 FEATURE DISTANCE RACE COULD TAKE UP TO 9 RACES IN ONE WEEK. THAT MEANS THAT WE COULD HAVE 4 FEATURE RACES IN ONE WEEK WHICH WOULD TOTAL 36 HEATS AND SEMI-FINAL RACES. SO THE NEXT WEEK OF NON-FEATURE RACES, THE NUMBER WOULD HAVE TO BE NARROWED DOWN IN ORDER TO ACCOMMODATE THE 4 FINALS RACES

THE RACE SCHEDULER IS GOING TO HAVE A TOUGH TIME SETTING UP THE SEASON SCHEDULE, BUT IT WOULD BE AWESOME IF THERE COULD BE SOME LEEWAY IN THAT SCHEDULE. WHAT I MEAN IS THAT THE FIRST TWO WEEKS WILL BE TRIAL RACES ONLY JUST TO GET 420 DOGS A LEGITIMATE GRADE. THEN AFTER THAT THEY WOULD COMPETE IN THE RACES THAT THEY QUALIFIED IN, BASED ON AGE, SEX & GRADE. THERE IS NO WAY TO PREDICT WHICH WEEKS WILL HAVE A SPECIFIC NUMBER OF HIGHER GRADED DOGS AND EVEN WHICH GRADED NUMBERS. SO IF IT WERE POSSIBLE FOR THE RACE SCHEDULER TO HAVE THE FREEDOM TO ADJUST CERTAIN RACES A WEEK OR TWO IN ADVANCE BASED ON WHAT HE/SHE KNOWS OF THE PROGRESS OF THE DOGS IN THE KENNELS IT WOULD BE EXTREMELY HELPFUL.

How the game is played in Greyhound Manager is how it could work in TOM

It just occured to me that the proposal above on how players could enter dogs into the races, is how we players submitted our dogs to races in Greyhound Manager. We do not submit our dogs to the Race Grader and then wait to see which were accepted for which distance races. The races appear a few days in advance and we enter dogs that we have that qualify for them. When the 6 traps are filled, the race is closed. Its as simple as that. So Thats how simple we should keep it in TOM. Greyhound Manager fudges on the real world procedures of greyhound racing so that it is playable game and we must do the same thing.

So I think that a schedule should be set up with a certain number of races per distance and each Trainer should submit their dogs to races that they qualify for. When the races fill up, they are simply closed and Trainers must move on to the other races that still have open traps. The Race Schedule would eventually get a feel for the number of dogs that would possibly qualify for certain types of contests and could adjust the number of races that would be available for that possible number of dogs.

What are you thoughts on this?

LOL Well Dave is now telling that some "logic" can be programmed into TOM that would make the race allocations pretty interesting. I'll let him formulate exactly what could be done in his estimation before I report it to you.

The html coding in Yuku is strange sometimes. Well what you do not see above is the drop down menus that Dave created in this section which is of course the Add New Race section. He needs to make some changes in the drop down menus above and he needs to add the GOING numbers. Then when that is all done we are going to start experimenting by me creating the beginnings of the new league season and testing it out. I am pretty excited about where we are and how far we have come in such a short amount of time!

Wonder if we will have some GRASS tracks in GM 2.0?
