Posts: 13030 (02/01/08 6:59 PM) ORLWorld Founder Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Tags : None Something has to be done right away in regards to the amount of time that I put in on the Draw, running the races, screen capturing them, screen capturing the kennels rosters and finally posting them two separate times. 24 races which I said I could do okay, turned into 33 this week. I have spent an incredible 20 hours this week on this which was way, way too much. And I still have to screen capture the trainers' kennels rosters and post the week 9 submission thread. I am not used to running my leagues this way at all and was certainly unhappy with the shoddy quality of service I had to give all of you this week. It was very embarrassing. And I can't spend every moment that I am on this Board, in the GPL forums as I am responsible for every forum on this Board which demand on my time as well. So for the GPL. First off we have to lower the number of nominations so that we get back to 24 races. This has to be done and/or I get some more volunteers who can help me lower my burden. If at least one of these does not occur I won't be able to continue this league at all. I know that may sound pretty drastic to some, but the entire ORLWorld will be jeopardized if my livelyhood is jeopardized. I love this league and feel that it has the potential to be eventually become a prestigious league like the Starters Orders Pro League is today, but that one is what it is today because of the efforts of the volunteers it has received for seven seasons now. I had hoped to finish out this season and then turn the league over to you all as a President, Race Secretary, Stat Keepers, Betting Parlour Manager, Tipsters and the rest of course, as trainers. That is the way I handled the SOPL in its second season. The way things are running right now though, I don't see how that could occur. So I would like your input on what should be done so this league can both survive and grow. Only 2 tracks to run every week. have a quick poll to find out the 2 or a vote or draw 2 out of a hat (something like that) Only run features every 4 weeks, but in that week NO normal races. Seems pointless to limit the amount of dogs allowed in kennel, if limiting the amount of entries allowed over any one distance. Will have a further think about it, and let you know what I come up with.

Personnally I don't mind keeping stats on how ever many dogs there are. This season alone i have got records for over 400 dogs (finish positions and times) So that is not a problem. Maybe limiting nominations to 2 dogs per distance (with preference given to the fastest) on normal races, and 4 for features. That way the normal races have more of a chance of actually running a full field.

Posts: 13034 (02/02/08 8:14 AM) ORLWorld Founder Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Keeping the various stats is not something that I am involved in so changes that would reduce the number of stats (limiting the number of dogs in a kennels or limiting the number of tracks in the GPL) would not affect the amount of time I have to spend running the league. Limiting the number of nominations would though. I too would not like it to be one dog per distance. That would be too drastic and would reduce both the excitement and interest in competing in the league. I have reduced the number of nominations to Feature races to 4 now, but that might be too many as well. Maybe Feature races should get a maximum of 3 noms from each player. After all I am sure that every player knows that they are nominating some dogs that don't have even the slightest chance of making it to the semi-finals. Those would be better off being nominated for the non-feature races. They might as well do that because starting this week I will be more vigilante on which ones are accepted into the Feature races. I need recorded times of each dog in a Feature race. New dogs maybe should compete in a non-Feature race first no matter how good the trainer feels that dog is. Maybe a recorded time should be the qualification of a dog to be even be considered for a Feature race. I really like that idea! Then it make it so much easier to reduce the overall number of races each week, down to 24. What do you think? It would however, shift some of the burden to DCM Greyhound to make sure all new times were recorded in the Stats and Records each week. If he is up for that challenge then that would be a huge help to me in reducing my time in running the league each week. If it would be too much for him alone each week, then that would be a perfect place for someone to volunteer to help out. Helping him in that area would be both helping me and the GPL considerably. This way we have alot more time in order to do what needs to be done. So for Jim that means he could do the races over a few days instead of all at once, rushing against time. Ok it would mean the league would take longer, but it would also mean the league would run more smoothly. So how ever many races there is, there is more time to run them. Sorry about this week Jim, with not updating the stats, but I had to do something far more important (my living comes first) But will not be a problem with keeping all the times for each dog over any distance it runs over up to date for the future. Yes all dogs entering features must have run atleast once over that distance, but then could create a whole new problem. Unraced dogs will have to get runs, in order for that dog to get a qualifying time. Maybe a solution to this could be to introduce trial stakes for feature races a few weeks prior to any given feature event, what would count as normal races for that week (so there would not be any extra races) This meaning even dogs that have run over that distance had to put in a time in order to qualify for the feature. This happens in the real thing to reduce the number of entries, so could be a good thing. The real Derby has over 300 dogs entering every year, and has to be brought down to only 48 (something around that figure) by the time the heats start. The main problem seems to be with the graded races (normal) i don't know how Jim is doing it at the moment, but maybe this needs reviewing. We need to set some grading times. But then the problem is, is that each track runs different! So maybe reducing the amount of tracks in the league to only 4 would make it easier until TOM comes into force. This would exclude features (where the trial stakes would be helpful) These are only just a few options, and need the wrinkles ironed out, but with us all working together I'm sure we can come up with something.

Having dogs compete at qualifying distances for Feature races on just 4 tracks instead of the 20 there are on the schedule now would ease the burden on the staff in that respect. So at the beginning of the Exhibition and the Inaugural season we had two weeks of just Trial races before the Feature races were introduced. We utilized 4 tracks in those two weeks of Trials. We should have the four tracks for those races be the four tracks that would be used all season long. Then even when new dogs are introduced mid-season they will need to compete in the various Trial races at the distances that they will eventually compete in for the Feature races. Yeah, I like that. Okay so I would say that Nottingham (10 distances hosted), Wimbledon (9 distances hosted) , Romford (9 distances hosted) and Reading (10 distances hosted) would be the best bet. They are also tracks that we have already competed on so we have times for all of those distances. DCM Greyhound may have to dig back into past weeks' formcards to get some of the times, but it would be worth it I think. I also feel that Sheffield would be the perfect track to host the GPL Championships at the end of the season. They currently host 12 distances, but I think it would be okay to include 375mH and the 525mH in the GPL Championships and add those two distances at Sheffield. After all, this is fantasy greyhound racing and not real world racing. Sheffield could now host all 14 distances for us. Now even though these 4 tracks will have many more distances that it hosts that does not mean in any way that we will have 3 and 4 races at all of those distances. That would be the same problem that we have right now as that could increase the number of races to 40 per week! So it would be even more important now, to state on the nomination form, the 1st and 2nd priority distances that your nominations could compete at. So if a dog could not make the Draw at its 1st priority distance, it could possibly make the Draw at its 2nd priority that was listed. If however, there was no 2nd priority listed, then it unfortunately would not make the Draw at all. This will require a little more strategy from the Trainers which might take a few more minutes of your time. Just understand that you would be sacrificing a few minutes so that it would save me hours of time in having to operate the races each week. I do also, like the idea of having maybe 2 or 3 weeks during a season where only Feature races would be hosted. Week 10 could possibly host the final 3 Feature races that were scheduled for the rest of the season outside of week 13 which begins the GPL Championships. On a side note, I think it would be best to have week 13 just host (7) GPL Championships distances Heats races, week 14 host the other (7) GPL Championships distances Heats races, week 15 would host the 28 GPL Championships distances Semi-Finals races and week 16 would host the 14 GPL Championships distances Finals. What do you think? No dog would qualify for the GPL Championships that had not competed at that distance before. And the maximum number of Heats for each distance would be 4. That would mean the 2 Heats weeks would have 28 races each, but I would be fine with that. Then the Semi-Finals week would also have 28 races which again would be fine with me. I would do my best to have the Draws posted on Monday and the Race cards posted on Tuesday. The Draws would be easier since most of the weeks I would not have to contend with Feature races as well. And on Feature race weeks I would not have to contend with non-Feature races. If this is acceptable I will rework the season schedule so that it reflects these changes starting with Week 10. You can look it over an approve it before it is officially implemented. What do you think? Sorry. I made some changes a few times as I have been going over this in my mind for the past hour, so you might have to re-read it in order to get the entire gist of what I now think might work for the remainder of the GPL season and hopefully, a GPL II. You should also know that I have been talking with two game companies who have agreed to sponsor the Lucky Seven League, the League of Champions, the Starters Orders Pro League and the Greyhound Pro League with nice size trophies for two seasons each year. That would have to start with GPL II, if we can get this all sorted out and I can turn this over to a fully staffed GPL for that next season, that is. I will start work on a new data system, where I can record a dogs fastest time over course and distance for the tracks what you have suggested. So they will be Notts, Don, Romford, Reading in the league and Sheffield for the championships. I'm glad that you could see what I was trying to say. On other note regaurding the limit of the kennel size, I feel that a trainer can have as many dogs as they like. This is where the trainers management of their kennel comes in. Making sure to trial the dogs the qualify them ect. Also with the high quality of dogs competing in the GPL at the moment, most trainers will only be wanting thier best dogs in the league (those capable of going close to track records ect) hence why i got rid of most of my kennel strength, with not a single dog to come in - I only wanted my better dogs in the GPL. So with this in mind, do we really need to set a limit?
